{"id":2523,"date":"2014-02-01T11:34:15","date_gmt":"2014-02-01T11:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/?p=2523"},"modified":"2014-02-01T11:34:15","modified_gmt":"2014-02-01T11:34:15","slug":"another-wwii-skirmish-play-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/?p=2523","title":{"rendered":"Another WWII Skirmish Play Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3189.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2520\" title=\"IMGP3189\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3189.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3189-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the club meeting last night I ran another test of the World War II game, I&#8217;ve been developing. \u00a0I was hoping to test two recent rule changes: assaulting tanks and hand-to-hand combat.<\/p>\n<p>The scenario involved a disabled German tank (mobility kill) between two small buildings. \u00a0Because the tank could fire on an off-board road the allies were using for supplies, a US platoon was sent to destroy it. \u00a0Two squads of infantry and a machine-gun section protected the tank. \u00a0The American players could choose which table edge to enter. \u00a0They chose the three sides on which the tank couldn&#8217;t fire &#8212; imagine that! \u00a0To try to get to vehicle close assault, I didn&#8217;t give the Americans a bazooka, just a couple of anti-tank grenades and some anti-tank rifle grenades.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2521\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3188.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2521\" title=\"IMGP3188\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3188-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Wide view early in the game\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3188-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3188.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wide view early in the game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Only two of the players had been involved in earlier play tests, so it was also a chance for me to see how people pick up the rules. \u00a0Everyone pick them up easily. \u00a0I don&#8217;t have my GM spiel for these rules well rehearsed yet, so I forgot a few nuances that had to be explained during play, but in general, the rules played smoothly, and the players were able to continue when I had to walk away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t get to fully test the vehicle assault. \u00a0The Americans had trouble getting close enough, because I didn&#8217;t give them enough forces. \u00a0Still, one squad got close enough to fire rifle grenades at the tank. \u00a0Normally only one person in a squad would fire rifle grenades, but again I wanted to test this part of the rules, so I let the Americans fire a rifle grenade with anyone who got close. \u00a0In this case &#8220;close&#8221; was long range. \u00a0As a result, all of the rifle grenades went wide. \u00a0After the game was over we tried it again. \u00a0In &#8220;post game play,&#8221; the rifle grenade hit the tank, penetrated, and brewed it up. \u00a0Very satisfying.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2522\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2522\" title=\"IMGP3191\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3191-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Late in the game as Americans assault the wall\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3191-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3191.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Late in the game as Americans assault the wall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Half of an American squad rushed the wall the Germans were using for cover. This wasn&#8217;t foolhardy as you might expect; they were trying to get to rifle grenade range. \u00a0This gave me a chance to test the new melee rules. \u00a0Bottom line: huge success. \u00a0The two guys who had experienced the earlier hand-to-hand mechanic thought this was a huge improvement. \u00a0One of the new guys controlled the American squad. \u00a0His comment was that it was quick, bloody, and decisive. \u00a0I wanted it to be exciting, and it was.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2519\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2519\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3190.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2519\" title=\"IMGP3190\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3190-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Initial setup -- German infantry protecting the rear of the disabled tank\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3190-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMGP3190.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Initial setup -- German infantry protecting the rear of the disabled tank<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On the way home, Duncan said his only criticism of the game was that morale resolution didn&#8217;t seem to have enough bad effects. \u00a0This was partially offset by the number of stuns and duck-backs resulting from fire. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been using this set of morale results for three or four games now, and I had come to the same conclusion myself, so Duncan validated what I was thinking. \u00a0I don&#8217;t wan to swing too far in the other direction, but I think I&#8217;m going to take about five of the &#8220;no effect&#8221;
