2011 a Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 22 JAN, the HAWKs hosted their annual gaming day at Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore, MD. \u00a0The turnout was very good. \u00a0We had 24 events run during the day, and every game master had enough players to run his or her game. \u00a0Genres varied from fantasy to WWII, with just about everything in \u00a0between.<\/p>\n<figure games using his scratch built figures. \u00a0These were built from various bits from the craft store. \u00a0It&#8217;s not often you can describe a war game as &#8220;cute,&#8221; but these really were. \u00a0The game was not silly. \u00a0It was a real ancients game, and both kids and adults seemed to enjoy it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_274\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-274\" the gaming room about mid morning. \u00a0In this picture you can only see about half the room. \u00a0We had 8 games scheduled to begin at 0900. \u00a0We weren&#8217;t sure we&#8217;d have enough gamers at that time to fill that many games. \u00a0While a few games waited until 0930 to start, every game was run (and was full). \u00a0We even had two ad hoc games get set up, Ambush Alley and Sea Harland-White&#8217;s <em>Airboats, Alligators, and Daemon Rum<\/em> game. \u00a0This is a race by bootleggers to get casks of rum past the revenue men. \u00a0The game uses a combination of Jamie Davis&#8217; <em>Future Race<\/em> rules and <em>Blood and Swash<\/em>. \u00a0My daughter won this game.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-276\" style=\"width: beautiful 28mm Carlist Wars game. \u00a0He claims to have the largest collection of Carlist Wars figures in North America. \u00a0He&#8217;s probably right. \u00a0This is a very niche Game<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Civil War author Scott Mingus ran a very attractive American Civil War ironclads game. \u00a0There were about eight players in this game. \u00a0Everyone seemed to enjoy it. \u00a0I think he did a really nice job on the terrain for this game. \u00a0Scott also had some of his books for sale.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_278\" our 16 player Cold Wars game. \u00a0We had just played 2\/3 of this game the night before at our regular HAWKs meeting. \u00a0We will make only minor tweaks for Cold Wars. \u00a0All of the players were engaged and fighting until we called the game. \u00a0We started about 45 minutes late. \u00a0We made sure the games run by non-HAWKs were filled before starting this 12-player game. \u00a0As a lot of folks arrived at 0930, we didn&#8217;t really get started until 0945. \u00a0The game had a hard stop time, because there were two games scheduled to use the tables after us. \u00a0If we had been allowed to play the full time scheduled (if we had started on time), the Germans and Russians might have been assaulting the town.<\/p>\n<p>This is a close-up shot of the Germans approach one of the Polish defensive lines. \u00a0The fighting was hot and heavy here for about an hour of game time. \u00a0The rules were <em>Look, Sarge, No Charts: World War II<\/em>. \u00a0Note how clean the board looks. \u00a0This is not prettied up for the photograph!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_282\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-282\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption Sarge game above with this view of another game at Barrage. \u00a0The aesthetics of the figures are completely destroyed by the charts, special measuring devices, and HUGE labels behind the units. \u00a0This game use a popular, expensive, hard-cover set of rules. \u00a0Which do you think looks better?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_279\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-279\" style=\"width: six-player Aerodrome game. \u00a0My kids love this. \u00a0In fact for his birthday last year, I bought Tommy a complete set of rules and playing aids. \u00a0I can&#8217;t afford to send him to college, now, but he can have fun playing this game. \u00a0This game ran from about 1400-1800, with players rotating in and out.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_280\" pirate game in which mobs of pirates were trying to sack the town, capture the fort, and get away with treasure. \u00a0The game lasted four hours and appeared to be exciting to the last.<\/p>\n<div
