{"id":7079,"date":"2017-11-23T14:06:17","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T14:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/?p=7079"},"modified":"2017-11-23T14:06:17","modified_gmt":"2017-11-23T14:06:17","slug":"combat-patroltm-science-fiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/?p=7079","title":{"rendered":"Combat Patrol(TM) Science Fiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7081\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7081\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2678.jpg 640w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2678-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave, Ellen, and Chris early in the game before the carnage unfolded.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last weekend, my buddy Dave and I drove up to Massachusetts to visit another buddy, Mark (&#8220;Ma&#8217;k&#8221;) for a day of gaming. \u00a0 Dave, Mark, and I used to game at West Point. \u00a0Mark has recently gotten back into gaming, and we used this as a chance to push some lead, swap old war stories, and have fun. \u00a0 The first game we played was a large <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucksurdu.com\/Buck_Surdu\/Combat_Patrol.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Combat Patrol(TM)<\/a> science fiction game. \u00a0Mark used mostly the original WWII rules, but laced it heavily with ideas from the Star Wars supplement and the Japanese morale from the South Pacific supplement. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>I think this game shows the flexibility of Combat Patrol(TM) and the ability to include portions of the optional rules and supplements in a &#8220;Chinese menu&#8221; fashion.<\/em><\/span> \u00a0And the game was a lot of fun!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7082\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7082\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4327.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7082\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4327-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4327-300x173.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_4327.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old classmates in replica &#8220;Gym Alpha&#8221; uniform shirts from our cadet days. These replica shirts were a little larger than when we originally wore them 30+ years ago.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark has been collecting vintage science fiction figures from companies like Archive. \u00a0We used a selection of star ducks, something called a Frinx, which is sort of lizard looking, Aphids, which are like frog people, and robots. \u00a0My contribution to the game were my Frinx in power armor riding glyptodons and a unit of star ducks painted in primary colored uniforms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7083\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2672.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7083\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2672-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2672-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2672.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The starting deployment for the good guys. We were trying to restart the captured robot tank to use agains the onslaught of robot men.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the scenario we, the good guys, had captured a robot sphere tank (an original Ma&#8217;k sculpt) and were trying to put it back into operation. \u00a0A swarm of mechanical robot men, the bad guys) were attacking to recover the vehicle. \u00a0They began with just a bunch of robots, but they were eventually reinforced by two more robot sphere tanks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7084\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7084\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2674.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7084\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2674-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2674-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2674.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7084\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aphids defending a ruined building.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Aphids are small, and they aren&#8217;t very good in hand to hand combat. \u00a0 Their strength lies in their organic mortars. \u00a0The Aphid &#8220;platoon&#8221; was deployed far forward and made contact with the enemy early while the Frinx and Star Ducks were still advancing to join the fray.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7085\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7085\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2676.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7085\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2676-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2676-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2676.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is a pretty good view of some of Ma&#8217;k&#8217;s robots.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark decided to use the Japanese Action Deck from the South Pacific supplement for the robots. \u00a0One of the Japanese morale results is &#8220;fight to the last man&#8221; in which the Japanese unit may not move for the remainder of the game, but they get to ignore most morale results for the rest of the game as well. \u00a0On the first turn, we inflicted a few morale checks on one of Dave&#8217;s units of robots, and he received this result. \u00a0While good for the Japanese when defending, this was not a good result for attacking robots. \u00a0Fortunately for Dave, they were in a position with good fields of fire.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7086\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7086\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2677.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7086 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2677-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2677-300x226.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2677.jpg 636w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of two Star Duck mortar teams. We made pretty good use of our mortars throughout the game.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7087\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7087\" style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2687.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7087 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2687.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2687.jpg 501w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2687-300x287.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frinx in power armor riding glyptodons taking grenade fire from chest-mounted robot grenade launchers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even with the speed of their prehistoric armadillo mounts, the Frinx cavalry took a while to join the fight. \u00a0After taking fire in turn two, half of them turned tail (literally) and ran for cover, and it took Chris a while to rejoin the fight. \u00a0Even from a distance, however, their long-range blasters enabled them to engage the enemy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7088\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7088\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2688.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7088\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2688.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2688.jpg 640w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2688-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Star Duck hero, Lieutenant Ma&#8217;k, used his jet pack to leap into the midst of two robot squads. He engaged them with his light saber, even as the Duck mortars were dropping rounds into the melee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Star Ducks have jet packs. \u00a0Mark allows them to jump three times during a game, drawing three cards from the Action Deck for movement instead of one. \u00a0The Duck hero, Lieutenant Ma&#8217;k used this ability to get himself into trouble. \u00a0He leapt into melee with elements of two squads of robots. \u00a0The Star Duck mortars had rounds in the air. \u00a0In Combat Patrol, units fire indirect fire when they activate, but the rounds aren&#8217;t resolved until the end of the turn. \u00a0Despite several rounds of friendly mortar fire, Lieutenant Ma&#8217;k fought bravely. \u00a0He eventually succumbed to the greater numbers of the nefarious robot bad guys.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7089\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7089\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2693.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7089\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2693.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" ray.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About this time the robots received reinforcements in the form of two more squads of robots and two sphere tanks. \u00a0The sphere tanks have laser cannons in the sponsons, but their main weapon is a heat ray that looks like the 1960&#8217;s War of the Worlds. \u00a0My Star Duck anti-tank team was moving forward, but Mark activated before I could fire. \u00a0All of my bazooka ducks were incapacitated, except one who was badly wounded, stunned, and having a bad day. \u00a0He never got off a shot before the game ended.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7090\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2698.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7090\" src=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2698.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2698.jpg 640w, http:\/\/bucksurdu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMGP2698-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, charges.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Chris was knocking out one of the tanks with long-range blaster fire, three of my Star Ducks used their jet packs to get onto another one to try to take it out with satchel charges. \u00a0In Combat Patrol(TM) you draw a card from the Action Deck and add the result on the &#8220;tend sided die&#8221; icon to the weapon&#8217;s penetration. \u00a0If that is greater than the armor where you hit the vehicle, you penetrate. \u00a0Had five attempts to penetrate the tank with satchel charges over two turns, but missed by one point twice and missed by a greater number the other times. \u00a0I did manage to immobilize it and knock out the heat ray, but we never did knock out the tank by the end of the game.<\/p>\n<p>At about this time, we called the game. \u00a0The siren song of pizza was calling us, and the robots realized that they were no match for the fearsome prowess of our carbon-based duck, Frinx, and Aphid forces. \u00a0This was a very fun game, and all the players seemed to have a really good time. \u00a0It was interesting to see how Mark&#8217;s mashup of different Combat Patrol(TM) options worked.<\/p>\n<div
